Swiss Company Produces New Lancet System for Diabetics

One of the largest European pharmaceutical and diagnostics companies has recently introduced a new lancet system for diabetics. The bulk of the high-precision components of this system, consisting of a combination of multicomponent plastic injection-molded and metal insert-molded parts, are produced by the Medical Division of Weidmann Plastics Technology in Switzerland.

In the new lancet system for diabetics, six lancets are integrated into one drum. After the use of one lancet, this lancet is retracted into the housing and secured to prevent accidental re-use. The drum is then rotated one “position” and a new, sterile lancet is ready for use. With this practical drum design, using extremely thin lancets, users have considerably increased ease of use and a far less painful and, as a result of sterile packaging, hygienic experience as well.

In addition to using the latest plastic molding process technologies, the product was also adapted from Swiss watch industry know-how. Through such technology transfers and in conjunction with its customers, Weidmann can develop and produce parts which attain a level of precision unimagined up to now. Using different combinations of plastic technologies and their ability to form channel systems, Weidmann is capable of developing products for diagnostics, labware and other medical applications, to name a few, and producing them in large quantities. In the case of the lancet system, one of the greatest production challenges was the highly complex combination of insert-molding (lancet) and multi-component molding (hard and soft plastics together) in the same high-cavity tooling. This production is done in clean-room conditions at Weidmann’s Bad Ragaz, Switzerland manufacturing facility.
